Garrett Apex vs Vanquish 540: Which multi-frequency metal detector should you choose?

Comparison between Garrett Ace Apex and Minelab Vanquish 540 multi-frequency metal detectors - similarities and differences, with a table of specifications, descriptions, and tips for future owners.

The American company Garrett and the Australian company Minelab are like two icebergs that never sink in the sea of search technologies, as they have provided treasure hunters around the world with metal detectors for decades. However, the world of treasure hunting is constantly evolving, increasing the demands on search equipment.

Minelab was the first to make a statement, introducing an entirely new line of beginner multi-frequency metal detectors in 2019. No other metal detector manufacturing company had taken such a step before.

The veteran Garrett company responded, without hesitation or panic, to its main competitor in 2020 by launching the Garrett Ace Apex, a multi-frequency metal detector with multi-frequency, multi-capability features.

Today, we will clear up the murky waters of rumors and speculation by comparing the capabilities of these two impressive devices.

Garrett Ace Apex vs Minelab Vanquish 540: A Look at the Results

Both devices are self-sufficient and provide a solid foundation for high performance in the field, with a variety of functions, options, and settings.

In this case, it is not entirely appropriate to discuss the obvious flaws of either device. All the basic functions used in detection (including professional functions) are available on both the Garrett Ace Apex and Minelab Vanquish 540.

More precisely, the Apex is more versatile and multifunctional thanks to its hybrid design – it provides multiple frequency and multi-frequency functions in a single detector. Four single-frequency modes are available: 5, 10, 15, and 20 kHz, in addition to two multi-frequency modes: Multi-Flex – for fields and forests (standard), and Multi-Salt – for saltwater and soil (beach detection). The Vanquish 540 is a classic multi-frequency detector that emits a single signal across multiple frequencies (Multi-IQ).You can also enhance the search capabilities of the Apex by connecting additional coils from other manufacturers. Currently, only three coil options from well-known brands are available for the Vanquish device.

So, if you plan to focus on specific types of targets, such as beach jewelry, gold pieces, and coins, the Garrett Ace Apex is worth considering. However, if you are looking for all kinds of buried artifacts, or you travel every weekend to expand your modest collection, or make small historical discoveries, or simply relax and enjoy the experience, then the Minelab Vanquish 540.
